WHY Internships
Thank you for your interest in World Hunger Year (WHY). We offer several unpaid internships that combine a variety of skills and talents. Please send your resume, and a cover note indicating your approximate starting and finishing dates and how many hours/days/week you would be available. The cover note should include a couple of paragraphs discussing why you are interested in interning with a national hunger and poverty organization, if you have any personal background in working with a non profit, what interests you have, and what you would want to learn from the internship.

Winter/Spring 2010 Communications Intern
World Hunger Year (WHY), a non-profit organization, seeks a Winter/Spring 2010 Communications Intern. Responsibilities include: media research, phone outreach, data entry, typing. We seek a motivated individual who is committed to public interest issues and has a demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks. Send resume and cover letter to:

Work Description: To assist in the day to day operations of the communications department. To provide general assistance to the Communications Director. The intern will report directly to Lisa Battito, WHY's Communications Director.
WHY's communications efforts promote information to the public at large, grassroots organizations and the media. WHY, a leader in the fight against hunger and poverty in the United States and around the world, is convinced that solutions to hunger and poverty can be found at the grassroots level.

Media Database
- Data Input from hard copy files and from research
- Update and Maintain current records
- Outreach to new media (for information)
- Typing & Correspondence
- Open and sort mail
- Create and maintain a filing system
- Internet research for hunger and poverty-related stories
- Respond to requests for information
- Create information packets for individuals and the media
- Write and distribute listings to the media as needed

Past internships at WHY have included:
WHY International, working with international department researching Urban Agriculture and Food Security issues
Development Intern, assisting the Development Director with foundation database, donor outreach and fundraising.
Harry Chapin Self-Reliance Awards, help with processing of awards given to grassroots organizations judged outstanding for their innovative and creative approaches to fighting domestic hunger and poverty by empowering people and building self-reliance
Reinvesting In America Program, providing administrative database and outreach support to Program Coordinator .RIA seeks to identify, champion and replicate innovative and effective grassroots hunger and poverty organizations that promote self-reliance.
Artists Against Hunger and Poverty Program, assist with Hungerthon(our largest annual public outreach) and events planning
National Hunger Clearinghouse, help develop online searchable database
