Amazing, energizing, catalyzing - a massive concentration of good folks sharing thoughts, ideas, and developing an action plan to create a just and food secure world for all. Welcome to the 3rd day of the U.S. Social Forum here in Detroit. Yesterday, I joined fellow WhyHunger staff Christina Schiavoni and Tristan Quinn-Thibodeau here in Detroit, arriving just in time to participate in the Food Justice People's Movement Assembly (PMA).

Behind-the-Scenes with Breaking Through Concrete: Greensgrow Farm, Philadelphia, PA

The first thing you notice when loading into the Hanson minivan is that the cameras onboard outnumber the passengers. Yesterday I joined David and Michael Hanson on the Brooklyn-to-Detroit leg of the Breaking Through Concrete  national urban farm tour, and we headed south through the rolling green and river shoals of Buck’s County, Pennsylvania.

Got Justice?

Appropriately, the evening began with a picnic featuring local cheese and ended with an ice cream social under a yellow moon. In between, dairy farmers, consumer advocates, professors, labor union representatives, faith communities, antihunger advocates, an aspiring cheesemaker, and even a Certified Public Accountant spoke out forcefully about the widespread injustices in the dairy industry.
