2009 Harry Chapin Self-Reliance Award Winners Announced

For more than 20 years, WHY has distributed cash grants of up to $7,000 to organizations judged outstanding for their innovative and creative approaches to fighting domestic hunger and poverty. The Harry Chapin Self-Reliance Awards honor organizations that go beyond emergency services to provide the education, training, and other supports necessary to end poverty. The 10 winners of the 2009 Harry Chapin Self-Reliance Awards match that description – helping Hurricane Katrina victims rebuild their lives, providing job training programs for homeless and low-income individuals, and effecting change from the grassroots up – WHY and the Harry Chapin Foundation are proud to announce the 2009 winners:

Community Center of St. Bernard - Arabi, LA

The Community Center of St. Bernard focuses their efforts on empowering families affected by Hurricane Katrina who are working to rebuild their lives by providing them with direct local access to the factual information and practical recovery resources they need in a safe and all-inclusive setting. They will use the award to offer the Money Smart Adult Financial Education Curriculum to low-income families they serve, 98% of whom are making less than $25,000 annually.

Cooperative Economics for Women - Revere, MA

The mission of Cooperative Economics for Women is to support low-income women, especially women of color, with a supportive group to learn organizing skills and leadership development for advocacy, promotion of policy change, and community development, including access/control of income. They will use their Harry Chapin Self-Reliance Award to design and pilot an expanded Food Security Program with a project tentatively called Organics for Everyone, focused on building regional relationships between community-supported agriculture programs and community-based organizations.

The George Wiley Center - Pawtucket, RI

The George Wiley Center is a statewide group actively committed to local community organizing for the purpose of creating social and economic justice through changes in public policy. They will use their Self-Reliance Award in their campaign to decrease hunger among children, primarily by increasing access to a nutritious breakfast through the expansion of the Universal Breakfast program.

Growing Home - Chicago, IL

Growing Home is committed to helping individuals transform their lives. They provide job training for homeless and low-income individuals in Chicago through a social enterprise business based on organic agriculture. Growing Home will use their award to continue to strengthen its model program and encourage others to replicate their model via written and web-based materials, workshops, public speaking opportunities, and helping people start their own gardens.

Hattie Carthan Community Garden - Brooklyn, NY
The Hattie Carthan Garden was formed in 1991 as a place where humans can expand their knowledge of plants and grow fresh food in Brooklyn. They aim to create an atmosphere of collective awareness, respect, and responsibility built on the resources of their community. The Harry Chapin Self-Reliance Award will help them to conduct a garden-to-market green job training program for neighborhood youth, and set up a produce drop-off program for senior citizens.

Huerto de la Familia - Eugene, OR

Huerto de la Familia strives to alleviate poverty and hunger among low-income Latino families by assisting them to grow their own organic food. They will use their Self-Reliance Award to create an Economic Development Program that would provide job training and help develop small businesses related to gardening and agriculture.
Massachusetts Avenue Project - Buffalo, NY

The Massachusetts Avenue Project nurtures the growth of a diverse and equitable community food system to promote local economic opportunities, access to affordable and nutritious food, and social-change education. Through the Harry Chapin Self-Reliance Award, MAP will produce replication manuals, and create “education stations” that will include information on composting, aquaponics, vermiculture, organic growing methods, and rainwater harvesting.

New Orleans Food and Farm Network - New Orleans, LA

The New Orleans Food & Farm Network believes everyone should have access to fresh, healthy, and sustainably produced food for the long-term health of our environment, economy, and communities. Their Harry Chapin Self-Reliance Award will be used to expand upon their Farm Yard Project, by developing a replicable model, increasing participant knowledge of sustainable food production, and supporting neighborhood leadership by expanding people’s capacity.

Women's Intercultural Center - Anthony, NM

The mission of the Women's Intercultural Center is to provide a safe place for women to learn and work together to develop their social, spiritual, economic, and political potential. They will use the award to provide a safe venue and secured atmosphere for immigrant women, educating women to overcome the cultural norms and gender roles with reference to Mexican culture, combat cycles of depression, and receive aid regarding childcare, transportation, and English proficiency classes.

Workers Interfaith Network - Memphis, TN

Workers Interfaith Network unites religious leaders, labor leaders, and workers to address economic disparities by demanding improved wages, benefits, and working conditions assuring that our community’s economic abundance is shared by all. WIN will use the Harry Chapin Self-Reliance Award to fund their Stop Wage Theft Project, which will allow them to work for solutions to the crisis of wage theft at both the local and national levels
