The National Hunger Clearinghouse collects and distributes information about community-based resources and government programs that address the immediate and long-term needs of struggling families and individuals. The National Hunger Clearinghouse is paid for by contract with the U.S. Department of Agriculture and managed by WHY (World Hunger Year). The Clearinghouse collects and distributes information through the following ways:
The National Hunger Hotline (1-866-3 HUNGRY), managed by WHY, receives thousands of calls from individuals and organizations in need of information and resources. Based on the particular need(s) of the caller, the Hotline provides referrals to emergency food providers, government programs and benefits, and community-based organizations helping individuals work towards self-reliance.
The Clearinghouse Connection is a monthly newsletter that provides information on upcoming conferences, policy initiatives and funding opportunities. It is designed to keep even the busiest individuals abreast of new developments in the movement to end hunger and poverty.

You will become a part of and have access to an online directory that contains information on thousands of organizations across the country that work on hunger, poverty, nutrition, agriculture and food issues. Individuals and organizations can search for resources in their community. By becoming a part of this directory, your organization may receive calls from individuals in need referred by the National Hunger Hotline.
Along with highlighting community-based organizations through the National Hunger Clearinghouse, WHY also manages the Grassroots Action Network. The Network provides additional information for organizations fighting hunger and poverty on a local level, focusing on innovatively building community capacity by, for example, partnering with farmers to glean more fresh food for hunger relief or engaging in economic development work through job training and micro-enterprise. Through the Network, staff can connect organizations to one another and to resources to help them build upon the services they provide and adapt to the specific needs of their communities.
